TOWN AND COUNTRY, MO. (KTVI) – On Sunday, people gathered at the Town and Country home of author Ridley Pearson to celebrate this year’s Variety Children’s Theatre Play.

This year’s story of choice is Peter Pan. Variety kid Libby Schueddig is looking forward to hitting the stage. Organizer Jean Steck says the plays are good for the kids it’s also a good way to connect with the community.

“I love peter pan in general and with his books and then the show.. it all works perfectly together.” said Schueddig.

“It’s a kickoff celebration and it’s all about being a lost boy and what it means to part of Peter Pan.” said Steck.

There was food and plenty of it. A feast of goodies layed out for guests was themed towards the free spirit of the children or lost boys. Pearson who co-authored the prequel to Peter Pan says his family has been part of Variety for the last 12 years. His two daughter’s Storie and Paige also helped prepare the food.

“All of the food items are designed to have some sort of connection to Peter Pan so there are peg legs and pirates and it’s all very imaginative food.” said Pearson.

Show director Lara Teeter says the play allows Variety’s kids to expand their horizons and experiences. It’s the 6th year of the event.

“We’re going to actually try to get some of the kids out of their chairs so they can partner with amazing athletes to help them get a sense of movement that they don’t normally get in a walker or chair.” said Teeter.

The play is set for October 25th- 27th at the Touhill Performing Arts Center at UMSL. Until then preparations will continue and so will the spirit of what Variety Children’s Charity that’s been doing for more than 80 years.

“Kids never group we want to support the kids the especially Variety kids. The community of St Louis is so central to the Variety program.” Pearson said.
